Journey “Deeper Than Purple” – It’s Guitar Day!

One of the most exciting and crucial parts of  recording the album has finally arrived!

After a break of festivities, it was time to head back to the studio to record the guitar parts. There were plenty of excitement and buzz in the studio, over the choice of gears and equipment and finding the tone and sound for the various tracks.

Though the boys learnt a lot during the process and they were in all seriousness during the recording, boys aren’t boys without some goofing around. Let us know whose hand you think it is that appeared in the video’s opening in the comments box below!

Videos without photos are no fun!

Videos are interesting to watch but nothing’s more exciting than the good ol’ ‘paparazzi’, splashing pictures of what goes on behind the scenes. A picture can say a thousand words so it’s going to be a huge chunk of words for these photos of the guys hard at work behind the studio walls.

Plenty of action, hot teas and coffees, melodious music, intense bouts of concentration, lots of discussions, creative brainstorming, shiny enticing gears usually take place during recording. However, no fun makes Jack a dull boy so the boys in the studio remembered to smile and laugh a bit too.

Guitar and gear fan boys, remember to standby a napkin. And for the non-huge fan boys or girls, enjoy the pictures too!

Deeper Than Purple with Khairil Yamin

“In the highway of Room354…”

The highway of Room354 is not a place plucked from the pages of sci-fi novels but is where Khairil Yamin was when I interviewed him. Oh yes, this young chap is the next person to come onboard the journey together with Rosli Mansor.

Having picked up the electric guitar over bass as a kid, Khairil started playing music with friends and subsequently formed a few bands. Newly solo, Kharil now finds himself on a brand new musical journey.

With a passion for music that can be matched against all the past interviewee’s experience combined, Rosli invited Khairil to join him and work together on the upcoming album. Khairil shared some interesting insights about Rosli as his mentor and what he feels about the instrumental journey.

Deeper Than Purple: Gavin Cardoza of Energy

You need a lot of guts to do this…you need guts and this guy’s got it.

- Gavin Cardoza

The fluid movement rippled across colours of white and ebony. Brows furrowed in concentration, his face broke out into an occasional smile or his concentration breaking when to discuss things.

That night within the walls of Studio 47, Gavin Cardoza (of local rock band Energy) played the keyboard for one of Rosli’s songs from his upcoming instrumental album.

Invited by Rosli upon the recommendation of producer and fellow Energy band member Keyjohan, Gavin’s fingers brought an extra touch to one of the most heartfelt songs written by Rosli.

Hear what Gavin has to say of the recording process and Rosli’s music.

Deeper Than Purple with Hamid of Black Dog Bone

After seeing Keyjohan and Azman working their magic behind the recording of Rosli’s upcoming album, don’t think that is it.  The invited guest musician coming on board this exciting project is someone who has played in some of the most prolific bands of the music scene for the past 30 years.

Hamid is a bassist of the legendary local band Black Dog Bone and sessions for another legendary and renowned local rock band Sweet Charity. A veteran to the music scene as both a musician and sessionist, Hamid brings his wealth of experience and hints of his magical touch to Rosli’s songs.

Working with Hamid, Rosli has nothing but praises.

I felt very honoured when he agreed to play some of the songs. He is a walking musical wizard on bass…plug and play and all the ideas flow. He made my songs alive with the depth of his tone and he blended so well with Keyjohan’s drumming and my melodies.

In this video, we get to see the infusion of his magic into Rosli’s songs and he reveals how it has been for him working with Rosli and the album.
